At Badi, we don't roast commercial coffee.
We believe in coffees with a name and a story. That's why we work with micro-mills: small processing centers where coffee is meticulously handled, not mass-produced.

What is a micro-mill?

A micro-mill is a small-scale coffee processing plant, managed by the producer or their family.
Unlike industrial mills, here the coffee farmer controls everything: from harvesting to drying, fermentation, and bean selection.

This model allows each coffee to express its origin more clearly: the type of soil, variety, altitude, and human effort can be tasted in every cup.

The origin of the micro-mill: Costa Rica

This revolution began in Costa Rica in the early 2000s.
A group of small producers decided to stop relying on large processing plants and start doing everything themselves.

This is how the micro-mill model was born, which has now expanded to other coffee-growing regions around the world.

What changes when coffee is processed in a micro-mill?

With this system, the producer can decide:

  • ✔️ How and how much to ferment the coffee

  • ✔️ How long to sun-dry it

  • ✔️ What type of process to apply (natural, honey, washed, anaerobic…)

  • ✔️ When to sort it and how to separate it into microlots

The result is more complex, defined coffees with a lot of character.

From farm to roaster, without intermediaries

Thanks to the micro-mill, producers can sell directly to roasters like us.
This eliminates intermediaries, improves the coffee farmer's income, and allows us to work with traceable, carefully handled lots with real stories behind them.

What do you gain from all this?

When you choose a coffee processed in a micro-mill:

  • You drink a coffee with higher cup quality

  • You can know the exact origin of what you drink

  • You support independent producers

  • You are betting on a more sustainable and honest way of producing coffee
